First established in 1896 the Smyth's pub celebrated its centenary just three years ago. Located in the sea town of Malahide on Ireland's east coast, this pub attracts visitors from far and wide and from all walks of life. Malahide has long been one of Irelands most well kept secrets of Coastal beauty.
This was somewhat different over a hundred years ago when this establishment received its first license under the management of Michael Hogan in 1896. The town was a quiet sea village of ever decreasing population made up mainly from the Ascendancy classes.
Fishing is still a very important part of the landscape. The newly developed Marina and the waterways around Malahide bring pleasure to cruisers and those who rely on the sea as their lively-hood from all over.
There is a section of the bar which is dedicated to the equine pursuits. Conversation is friendly to those of all ages and one will always feel welcome to stay and chat.
In keeping with Irish golfing tradition, the 19th hole has always been the place to celebrate a great day of golf. Malahide and its surroundings host some of the finest golf courses in the world. The pictures and beautiful cabinets filled with proof of Ireland as a great golfing nation. Many of the pictures of local golfers who have gone on to put Ireland on the international golfing map are hung as a tribute.
There is a section of the bar, with its oak finish, which is reminiscent of the old Irish pub. With high and low tables there is plenty of room to stand and enjoy your food or drink. This room was especially redesigned to commemorate the celebration of the pub's centenary, with its beautifully crafted glass cases of sporting history, for Soccer, GAA, Cricket and Rugby, in their local and national capacities. Depicting Ireland's great sporting tradition through an impressive collection of Jersey's, Balls, Team photos and Newspaper clippings, and many other items of historical significance to Irish sport. In fitting with the rest of the pub it is adorned with many old items of yesteryear.
The peaceful dark grained mature Oakwood surrounding makes it a particularly intimate and peaceful part of the bar. In the winter the fire is often lit giving it that old Irish pub atmosphere. As you enjoy a quiet drink or a tasty bite to eat from the American Style menu you can hear about Ireland's great golfing history from the various artifacts, memorabilia and trivia, including the golf bag of local golfing hero - Ryder Cup and Murphy's English Open Veteran - Philip Walton.
Part of the bar shares its name with the Malahide Marina and lies testament to Malahide's great sea fairing history. With it's brick, stone and Oakwood surroundings giving it the look and feel of the old world Irish pub. This room is brightly lit due to its glass roof which glows in the daylight. During the week, this section of the bar comes to life with the sounds of Traditional Irish music. Smyth's of Malahide have a fine band playing the very best in Irish folk and ballad music for your aural pleasure.
