In 1893, W.C. Pickeman and George Ross set their sights on a land to make a golf course of about two miles long and on 500 acres. The same ground was used as golfing ground in mid 18th century. After a year of its establishment, twenty-five-year lease was agreed in 1894 to establish a complete golf club with all facilities available.

Nine holes were immediately laid out and the formal opening took place on Stephen's Day 1894. The building first used as a clubhouse was an outhouse belonging to a local resident. The course rapidly developed to 18 holes with next two years. However, these holes changed over years, increasing their difficulty as well as excitement level.

In 1971, the course was again upgraded to 27 holes, making the course more competitive. In addition to that, there are no tricks, nasty surprises in the course. It is a general test of golfers' ability to keep the ball in fairway. Portmarnock Golf Club is located in the north-east of Dublin, about 10 miles from Dublin City Centre.
