The Royal Dublin Golf Club was established in May 1885. A Scot - John Lumsden pioneered the formation of Ireland's second oldest golf club. Formally called Dublin Golf Club; it was located near the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park. After a year of its establishment, the Club moved to Sutton and finally in 1889 moved to its present home on the Bull Island.

Having thought-provoking history, during the First World War the course was taken-over by the military and was used as a rifle and artillery range. With €10,000 compensation, the Clubhouse was re-constructed and re-designed by H.S. Colt in 1920. In 1943, the Clubhouse was destroyed by fire and it was not until ten years later that the new Clubhouse opened in 1954. The Royal Dublin Golf Club covers more than 65 hectares of lush green land.

In 2000, the pro-shop and admin wing were re-built and they merge in very nicely with the existing clubhouse. There is an excellent Dining Room as well as one of the finest Grill Room off the locker area. Bar facilities are located on the first floor in the Clubhouse overlooking the 18th green with a panoramic view of the course, sea and surrounding countryside.
