Review: The stories of frequently itinerant immigrants torn between tradition and modernity as they are absorbed into western pots have been carried out in countless movies. But, Hats off to Mira Nair who pulls out all the stops beguilingly to screen the integration of two cultures and traditions in her film, the Namesake.
The movie begins when the Ganguli family travels from Calcutta to New York for permanent stay. The very prime lifelong balance act that needs to be embarked upon is to meld into a new world without disregarding the old. Because of being enveloped in ancestral culture, the Ganguli family gets pleasure from the opportunities their sacrifices have paid for their children. In contradiction, their son Gogol is torn between finding his own unique identity but not at the cost of his heritage.
The Namesake is about longing for roots when expatriate families lend a soulful undertow. It contains the genres of drama and adaptation, blended grippingly and is starring Kal Penn, Zuleikha Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Jacinda Barrett etc.
