Description: Experience the pleasure of watching a caterpillar become a beautiful butterfly in the tropical fantasy world of the Butterfly House in Dublin. Located in the heart of Fingal, the Butterfly house guarantees you'll have the time of your life watching these exotic creatures take their first flight.

Dublin Butterfly House

The Butterfly House is in an enclosed tropical area where perhaps over a thousand butterflies live their lives, feeding, mating and laying eggs. You may identify the most beautiful tropical butterflies, point out the females depositing their eggs on host plants and feeding on flowers. Visitors may touch the legs of butterflies and discover how they hold on to plants or try to find the lottery number on their wings. You may discuss topics such as the role of butterflies in nature, their defense mechanisms and those of their host plants are but a sampling of the many themes discussed.

From Caterpillar to butterfly - Once the eggs are laid, the larvae (caterpillars) emerge and need to be reared on their specific host plants. Visitors can then view the amazing metamorphosis of the caterpillar forming the pupae where their bodies change from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. The entire cycle of the metamorphosis can be seen and in the early morning you may even see the butterflies emerging from their chrysalides and taking off for their maiden flight.

Spend an hour, a day or longer you are guaranteed a unique experience of a lifetime. Private tours can be arranged for student groups. With previous arrangements, the farm's guides will tailor the tour for specific interests such as: butterfly farming as a sustainable economic activity, butterflies and the ecology and The Butterfly House.

There are ample opportunities for photographing every stage of the butterflies before, during and after one's tour. As most of the butterflies in the tropical House are farm-bred, they tend to be more passive and "people friendly" then their wild brethren, thereby allowing close-up opportunities not afforded in nature

Dublin Butterfly House is located in the heart of Fingal. It is owned and run by Michael Jones and his family and is situated on their farmland. Butterflies have been a life-long love of Michael's and he has brought his dream to life in this tropical fantasy world. You can enjoy the unique pleasure of watching the world's most spectacular butterflies free-flying in a natural habitat and experience their life cycle first-hand.
