The Modern Exhibition Area is bright and spacious and looks out on the St Begnet's Church & Graveyard. It houses the Rathdown Slab, a pre-Christian burial marker which was found in St Begnet's Graveyard.
There are Information Panels on Dalkey's origins which began in 4500BC on Dalkey Island. The stories and legends of Dalkey such as the Dalkey Gold Rush with Etty Scott and the Crowning of the King of Dalkey are also chronicled.
The award-winning Heritage Centre includes a fifteenth century medieval tower house, a tenth century Church & Graveyard, a Gift Shop & Dalkey Town Hall, a Modern Exhibition Area and a vibrant Art Gallery. Scaled models and information panels with text written by local Tony-Award winner, Hugh Leonard, vividly illustrate the history of the area.
The rich literary history of the area is enhanced by the fact that James Joyce set Chapter Two of Ulysses in Dalkey. International best selling author, Maeve Binchy and film-director, Neil Jordan live in Dalkey. There is a Writers' Gallery with information on the acclaimed writers of the locality.

Stroll through the centuries ...with a visit to Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre!
This award-winning restored 15th century castle and heritage centre is only 20 minutes from Dublin City Centre. Climb to the top of the battlements for the best view of Dublin. Heritage trails, historical walks, familiarity with Irish customs and folklore is all available at Dalkey. Dalkey has bistros, bars and cafe to satisfy you after a long walk down history. There is also the wonderful early Christian church and graveyard of St. Begnet's. Tours on request.

BARBER SURGEON
It was the infamous Henry who combined the trades of Barber and Surgeon in 1540.In the Living History presentation The Tudor Barber Surgeon of Dalkey follows suit, with gruesome and often hilarious consequences. THE TUDOR ARCHER defends the loyal Castle at Dalkey with his longbow. Hear all the terms of archery such as: ‘keep it under your hat’, ‘another string to your bow’, and of course the origins of the infamous V sign! THE MEDIEVAL COOK prepares a meal of Tudor delights.THE GHOST OF ST BEGNET’S GRAVEYARD alights in Tudor Ireland and a mystery unfolds.
There is a Living History Live Performance every half hour daily (except Tuesdays). Larger groups can book for one hour.

Guided Historical Walks
Guided Historical Walks leave from Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre June 1st –August 31st on Monday, Wednesday & Fridays at 11.00.Advance booking necessary.
Guided Literary Walks to settings in the work of James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Flann O'Brien and Hugh Leonard can also be arranged (minimum number required).
