Calvin Broadus was born in 1972 and raised in Long Beach in California where he earned the nickname Snoop from his mother because of his appearance. Snoop Dogg began rapping in his teens and started recording homemade tapes with his friend Warren G. Warren G gave one of his tapes to his stepbrother, Dr. Dre and Dre began collaborating with the rapper.
When Dre started working on his debut album The Chronic, Snoop became the star of the show with his drawled rapping featuring prominently on such massive hits as "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thing" and "Dre Day". The success of The Chronic set the stage for Snoop's much anticipated debut album and when Doggystyle was released in 1993 on Death Row Records it became the first debut album to enter the charts at number one.
