Airfield house was built during the 1820's and passed into the hands of the Overend family in 1894.
The Airfield Trust was established in 1993 to run the estate left by the Overend sisters. It is now being maintained and developed to provide recreational, educational, and cultural activities. By the spring of 1998 farming began again in Airfield and with major renovations taking place, educational programmes began. Presently, Airfield spreads over an area of 35 acres and is a sought venue for cultural, recreational and educational activities.
The estate includes a large house and restaurant and a mixed farm with donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, pigs and hens. Airfield also has five acres of beautiful ornamental gardens which include a rose garden and a herb garden. A marked trail around the perimeter of the estate, a picnic area and a wildflower meadow can also be visited.
There are facilities for artists to exhibit and create in, (art studios, a print room and a photography studio), a classroom complex (for primary education programme), and a room for general meetings. There are also rooms available in the main house for small private functions or meetings, and the restaurant can cater for a wide variety of functions and meetings.
Airfield regularly hosts cultural and artistic events including literary readings and music recitals. There are art exhibitions in the Library, and Airfield has also run an open-air exhibition in the grounds of the estate in the summer.
Airfield is now considered the most popular tourist attraction in Dublin. The shops provide a wide assortment of gifts, garden accessories, plants, jewellery, hand-made candles, and children’s clothes and gifts.
