The festival will present one of the most influential writers and visual artists in the whole of Central and Eastern Europe – a myth, a legend and an ongoing inspiration for hundreds of artists and literature scientists, but also a very tragic human fate marked through a loss of everything – his last manuscript, his murals and even his grave.
Only because the universe created by Bruno Schulz in his two published books and in his later found epistolary legacy has an almost mythological power, his dramatic death, the devastation of the WWII, the change of the Polish borders, his Jewish roots – very unpopular during the communistic times - all these were unable to expel his impact on the Polish and at least the European arts.
The unbroken presence of Bruno Schulz can be proven not only through the amount of publications and websites presenting or analyzing his work, but also through many masterpieces of contemporary art inspired by him.
Also presented are:
the powerful jazz composition by John Zorn “Sanatorium under the sign of hourglass - tribute to Bruno Schulz” - in it's best interpretation by Bester Quartet (former Cracow Klezmer Band)
animation masterpiece by two British film directors - brothers Quay “Street of Crocodiles” based on Bruno Schulz’ prose
the documentary by a German film director – Benjamin Geissler “Finding pictures” who found the missed murals by Bruno Schulz in Drohobych (today's Ukraine) and was documenting the most controversial arts acquisition of the resent years.
All these artists and their works are outstanding; all works to be presented are of great expression and importance.
We dare to showcase them together under one name – Bruno Schulz Festival.
It is a risky endeavour, but “we did not choose the topic, the topic chose us” as Bruno Schulz used to explain his drawings.
Please join us on the 3rd of May in the Liberty Hall Theatre and send this information to your friends.
