OCTOBER
Sun 5th : Introducing Sonia Esquivel €10
Raised in a musical family with roots in Brazil and Paraguay, these days Sonia Esquivel is a Dubliner, and its high time she made her Pendulum debut. With pianist Francesco Turrisi augmenting her regular trio of Argentine guitarist Lucas Gonzalez and Cuban percussionist Frailan Moran, this is a refreshingly authentic exposition of the subtleties of samba, bossa nova, choro and other Brazilian grooves. Singing in her first language, Esquivel applies a velvety warm voice and confident phrasing to the artful songs of Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque and Djavan, bringing a little of that carioca style to Aungier Street. With special guests, Argentinean duo Marianela Gulizia and Ariel Hernandez.
Sun 12th : Mikkel Ploug Quartet feat: Mark Turner €14
“Guitarist Mikkel Ploug’s star has been ascending—not only in his native Denmark, but also in international jazz circles.” All About Jazz
Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug has that rarest of jazz commodities, a working band, and this fourth extensive tour brings this stellar quartet to Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Ireland. With a brace of recordings under his belt for Barcelona’s Fresh Sounds, the label that is an ever reliable bellwether of emerging jazz talent worldwide, this supple and inventive player and composer is growing in creative stature. Teasing out his original music is a band of some significance, with bassist and fellow Dane Jeppe Skovbakke, Irish drummer of the moment Sean Carpio and celebrated American tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, whose cool lyricism has been a key influence for emerging musicians of the last decade.
Sun 19th : TBC
Sun 26th : Bang goes Bottlenote €10
Vorsprung durch technik, as JJs gets a digital makeover from The Bottlenote Collective, for a night of adventures in twisted jazz, improv and electronica as part of DEAF 2008. Estonian sound artist Alo Allik, already a veteran of the electro acoustic and multimedia scenes in Amsterdam and New York, opens with a deeply algorithmic deejay set, followed by the liberating and noisy explorations of Lakker, aka Dara Smith, one of Ireland’s finest electronic artists. To conclude, a brand new project from the heart of the Irish jazz scene in Bang Hazard, where Justin Carroll, Greg Felton and Shane Latimer collaborate with Allik in forms and improvisations that embrace acoustic instrumentation and live processing, bridging the analogue and digital traditions.
NOVEMBER
Sun 2nd : Microclimate invite Stephane Payen €10
Microclimate finds bassist/composer Ronan Guilfoyle going to the well of Irish music making with impressive results.
Quite apart from command of the instrument, drummer Sean Carpio has a sharp musical mind that isn't trammeled by tired notions of genre, and Limerick guitarist Joe O'Callaghan is a coming force in Irish jazz guitar, with extended lines and contemporary chord shapes that imply players like Abercrombie and Scofield.
They're joined by the impressive altoist Stephane Payen, a founder member of Paris’s Hask Collective, described by The Guardian’s John Fordham as mixing “a balletic Charlie Parkerish lightness with Evan Parker's squirting sonic abstractions “. This adventurous player will find himself in good company, and joins microclimate for a night's music centred on Guilfoyle's idiomatically savvy tunes for guitar trio.
Sun 9th : Tommy Halferty Trio €10
The evergreen Halferty is from Derry, that most musical of Irish cities and since the late 70s, he's been an irrepressible voice, always lyrical and animated, and a formative influence for many Irish jazz musicians. Among them are bassist Ronan Guilfoyle and drummer Conor Guilfoyle, who join the spirited improviser here for a typically eclectic programme of standards, contemporary originals, and freshly minted arrangements of Irish traditional melodies. They're the ideal foil for Halferty's passionate and agile guitar style, and they’re playing JJs prior to the trio’s departure for concerts in Vietnam, a first for Irish jazz.
Sun 16th : John Stowell (USA) & Hugh Buckley €10
Hugh Buckley may be among the more unassuming guitarists on the Irish scene, but his resume of international associations speaks volumes for the esteem in which he's held elsewhere, and 2008 has proved a bountiful year for collaborations. The latest is Oregon based John Stowell, the American guitarist whose career spans three decades and includes historic tours to the Soviet Union with flautist Paul Horn, compositions for film and frequent contributions to Downbeat. A name that elicits much respect from other guitarists, he shares stylistic common ground with Buckley with a similar penchant for the chordal and linear approach of the bop masters.
Sun 23rd : Swing & Co €10
There’s always room for swinging music in Aungier Street, and it’s in good hands with Swing & Co, a pleasingly diverse snapshot of musicians currently based in Dublin, all with an interest in vintage jazz from between the wars. French guitarist Guillaume Lelong leads this particular hot club with Hungarian saxophonist Peter Dobai, and Slovakian bassist Lubomir Taliga, along with guitarist Jamie Toomey, trumpeter Bill Blackmore and singer Ciara Redmond, and collectively they evoke the spirit of Django in style.
MONDAYS:
Mon 20th October : Dave Allen Trio (USA) www.daveallenjazz.com www.myspace.com/daveallenquartet
"Dave Allen is one of a number of spitfire jazz guitarists raising the bar on that ever-popular instrument. But Allen offers more than battle-ready chops—his Untold Stories and Real and Imagined are about original music, loftily conceived, with graceful melodic content and subtle rhythmic challenges... he’s got the pull to assemble world-class bands every time out.
" -David Adler, Jazz Times
"An exciting and unique player in the mold of Pat Metheny, Ben Monder, and Adam Rogers. Monster chops, harmonic resourcefulness, strong melodic sense, seamless group interaction, considerable compositional talent and a kick-ass group of talented players.

Fri 31st : Don Weller (UK) & Nigel Mooney www.nigelmooney.com
Don Weller: British modern jazz is overpopulated with unsung heros. For over forty years there has been a group of musicians in this country who, having initially been inspired by American jazz of the 50's and 60's have constantly developed their own way of doing things. The survivors of this generation of British jazz musicians, who have played for over 30 years in the pubs and clubs for what often didn't amount to a living wage, have stuck with it because creating music is what they live for. Through this struggle they have matured into master musicians that are the equal of those that inspired them.
Don Weller is one of these, along with Stan Tracey, Peter King, Bryan Spring, Evan Parker to name but a few. Don's music career started when he played Mozart's clarinet concerto in the Fairfield Hall, Croydon as a fourteen year old. He went on to take up Tenor Saxophone, with lessons from Kathy Stobart and formed his now almost legendary group "Major Surgery" which ran for 9 years playing his own compositions. He then formed a quartet with drummer Bryan Spring as well as being a regular member of Stan Tracey's Octet. Don has always played, always run his own under worked quartet, always written music of great quality and has always been undervalued. He has however also always been a great inspiration to younger players, who have sometimes gone on to gain the sort of acclaim that Don has missed.
Dons writing career has developed alongside his tenor saxophone playing for over thirty years. It began 36 years ago when at the age of 18 he wrote and arranged a piece for the Croydon Jazz Orchestra. His band "Major Surgery" played exclusively Don Weller compositions for ten years during the nineteen seventies. He has since then composed for all the regular quartets with which he has worked and has built up a large catalogue of works some of which have been recorded by other artists. He has worked on film scores such as "Absoloute Beginners" and "Stormy Monday" in which he was involved both as a player and composer.
While he is now widely accepted as one of Britains' leading saxophone players (Top Tenor award in 1994,1996 & 1998 polls) his writing has never received the sort of recognition that it deserves. His writing which stems from the maturity of his own playing also has that rare ability to be memorable so that even on first hearing it can set people humming all the way home.
In the world of musicians Don is held in very high esteem as the "real thing" as an example of what they all aspire to, a musician with his own distinctive voice, his own way of doing things and a consummate grasp of the musical language. His own musical language has grown, widened and blossomed over years of playing "himself" When asked about the ever changing trends in jazz and the growing number of child prodigy saxophone players there seem to be these days Don says modestly " They do what they do and I do what I do."
Jack Massarik of The London Evening Standard wrote " He imitates nobody yet
swings as hard and plays as soulfully, inventively and, if necessary, as devastatingly
fast as any American icon could."
