SUNDAYS: THE PENDULUM (JAZZ CLUB). Adm €10 (Unless Otherwise Stated)

JANUARY

Sun 10th : Lupo & Trilogue
The spirit of renewal is alive and well in JJ’s as we kick start 2010 with two brand new projects from the creative end of the musical spectrum. Lupo are singers Sarah Buechi and Lauren Kinsella, who’ve just completed their debut CD, Sessile Oak. This is a venturesome duo, drawn to taut compositions that embrace extended vocal and improv techniques and polarities of volume, pitch and timbre. With Trilogue, bassist Ronan Guilfoyle brings his broad compositional experience in the classical and jazz world to bear in an improvising chamber group with Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura and Sarah Buechi. The lines between jazz and contemporary composed music are increasingly fractured and Trilogue explore the cracks, embracing a range of textures, moods and dynamics outside the vocabulary of either genre, implying a music for the times we live in.

Sun 17th : NY NOW : Will Vinson / Lage Lund Quartet www.willvinson.com Adm €12
New York still exerts an irresistible gravitational pull for talented young musicians form across the globe, and throughout 2010 Pendulum will be bringing you exciting green shoots from the world’s most demanding jazz scene. We hit the ground running with a stunning quartet co-led by two of the city’s hottest prospects. Alto saxophonist Will Vinson is a young Londoner based in NYC over the last decade, and his muscular alto is finding friends in NYC, where among other projects in the front rank, he’s a Mingus Big Band regular. Norwegian born Lage Lund is a brilliant guitarist in the contemporary vein of Kurt Rosenwinkel, and is the 2004 recipient of the Thelonious Monk Prize, now arguably the world’s most prestigious award for jazz soloists. Keen jazz followers will be familiar with their rhythm section of bassist Orlando Fleming and drummer Jochen Ruckert, who’ve both previously graced Irish stages with memorable results. Collectively they lay down a marker for visits later in the year from Peter Van Huffel Group, John Escreet’s The Story, and Pete Robbins Quartet.

Sun 24th : Mantrum
Borne of an adventurous, no holds barred jam session encounter at last year’s 12 Points Festival, Mantrum is a collaborative project between Swedish and Irish musicians, with reciprocal gigs in Dublin’s JJs and Stockholm’s Glenn Miller Club. The lingua franca is ‘non-idiomatic improvisation’ an intriguing catch all that will allow for maximum spontaneity and invention built around deformed pop hooks and deceptive grooves. Bringing the meatballs to Dublin are saxophonists Thomas Backman and Nils Berg, who memorably led his own quintet at the first 12 Points in 07. Smuggling spiceburgers to Stockholm are bassist Cormac O’Brien, drummer Shane O’Donovan and the project’s creative instigator, guitarist Shane Latimer.

Sun 31st : Puck Fair www.myspace.com/puckfair
Brian Dunning has a breathtaking command of the flute, coupled with a most personal approach to jazz improvisation and traditional music. He returns here to the original framework of one of his most successful projects, bringing together the versatile guitar playing of Sean Whelan and the infectious grooves of percussionist Robbie Harris. Twenty one years on from the original line up’s debut release Fair Play, Dunning, Whelan and Harris have released forgotten Carnival, an all acoustic affair that reboots the Puck Fair signature of Celtic inflection and jazz spontaneity for the 21st century.
