Puccini based his opera in part on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco. Puccini also based it on the novel Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti.
Madama Butterfly will see the Opera Ireland debut of the remarkable Korean soprano Yunah Lee as the tragic Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio San while American tenor Keith Olsen will play the U.S. naval lieutenant Pinkerton. This production of Madama Butterfly will be conducted by Bruno dal Bon who returns to Opera Ireland after his triumph with Opera Ireland’s sell-out Turandot last year.
Madama Butterfly is a perennial favourite with opera audiences around the world. Puccini’s heart-breaking score on the classic tale of unrequited love and death contains some of the most beautiful and memorable operatic music of all time.
