This powerful and enduring play will be performed from the 21st July to the 16th August.
It's 1960. The IRA has kidnapped a British soldier to use him as a bargaining tool for the release of an Irish prisoner who is due to be executed in Belfast. The British soldier is held prisoner in a Dublin lodging house that is also a brothel.
Discussions about Irish nationalism and identity are at the core of this absurdist tragi-comedy, presented in site-specific form at the Pearse Centre, Padraic Pearse's birthplace, open to the public as a theatre for the first time. This exciting, on-the-edge, fun and intense production includes elements of cabaret and musical theatre that will make for a thrilling experience. Irish traditional music and Rock and Roll merge as the characters burst into song in Wonderland's sparkling production
Wonderland has been praised as ‘the most promising company since the debut years of Rough Magic’ by The Irish Times. Founded in 2003, it is best known for its 2007 Dublin Fringe Festival hit, Molière’s The Miser - performed site-specifically in an historic Georgian home, its sell-out lunchtime opera version of Pagliacci at Bewelys Café Theatre in 2008, and its self-help spoof Life Shop till you Drop! which is currently on its third national tour. Wonderland's site specific production of Goldoni's La Locandiera is currently touring Ireland after its acclaimed debut in February 2009.
